Community Renewal Society (CRS) is an organization rooted in a faith-based tradition which empowers people to combat racism and the effects of poverty by providing tools such as objective,investigative journalism and community organizing and training to congregation leaders. In recent years, CRS’ efforts led to the passage of statewide nursing home reform and prescription drug discounts for seniors and played a significant role in Chicago Public School reforms implemented under the former Mayor Richard Daley. CRS maintains a strong affiliation with the United Church of Christ. It employs a staff of nearly 30 including nationally-respected organizers and award-winning journalists, and operates from a $3.4 million budget. More information can be found at: www.crsucc.org
Position
In early 2012, after 14 years of service, the current Executive Director will retire. The Board of Directors seeks a new Executive Director to lead and transform CRS- to inspire, inform and organize a new generation of people of faith towards social justice in the metropolitan area. A person of faith, the Executive Director will grow CRS’s social relevance and develop creative and strategic approaches to engage communities and congregations. The Executive Director will use a recently completed strategic plan framework to participate with board members, staff and external constituents to shape the future vision, mission and structure of CRS.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate brings a minimum of fifteen years nonprofit administration experience in large urban settings that includes implementation of social justice initiatives through faith communities, and a record of forging partnerships between civic, business, government, nonprofit, and faith based organizations. S/he has the ability to frame social issues and solutions in faith-based and secular terms and has exceptional and inspirational communication skills, including large audiences and local and national media outlets. S/he has experience with fundraising and an ability to lead and motivate a dedicated professional staff.
